Photovoltaics in Pop Culture: From Movies and Video Games to Reality

From dystopian movies to survival video games, photovoltaics appear as the energy of the future. Find out why.

Photovoltaics in Pop Culture: From Movies and Video Games to Reality
How movies and video games shaped our collective perception of the future of energy
Pop culture is more than just entertainment. It is a mirror of how we imagine the future, our technologies, and—very often—the mistakes of the past.

In recent years, renewable energy sources and especially photovoltaics have appeared increasingly often in movies and video games, sometimes as a solution and sometimes as a quiet reminder that the world is changing.

When energy becomes a central theme in science fiction

When energy becomes a central theme in science fiction
In science fiction cinema, energy is rarely just technical background. It is usually at the heart of the story.

In dystopian or post-apocalyptic scenarios, humanity has depleted its natural resources. Fossil fuels are gone or prohibitively expensive, and the heroes turn to decentralized solutions: small, self-contained systems, wind turbines, solar panels on rooftops, vehicles, or remote bases.

This image is no coincidence. Photovoltaics symbolize:
  • independence from central grids,
  • survival with limited resources,
  • technology that works with the environment instead of destroying it.

In movies such as Mad Max: Fury Road, energy is as precious as water. Although photovoltaics are not at the center of the story, the absence of sustainable energy solutions is what causes the world to collapse.

In Blade Runner 2049, we see a highly technological but ecologically depleted world. The vast, empty expanses and energy infrastructure in the background remind us that development without balance leads to a dead end.

Even in Interstellar, energy plays a decisive role. Earth is not destroyed by war, but by environmental collapse. Renewable energy sources are presented as a necessary, but not sufficient, step toward salvation.

Video games: where photovoltaics are a gameplay mechanic

Video games: where photovoltaics are a gameplay mechanic

In the world of video games, the connection with energy is even more direct. It is not just an aesthetic element—it is a survival mechanic.

In Death Stranding, the player builds infrastructure in a devastated world. Photovoltaics appear as a logical and sustainable option for charging equipment in isolated areas.

In Fallout 4, settlements need energy to function. Although generators dominate, mods and later games in the series clearly show a shift toward cleaner solutions.

In Surviving Mars, photovoltaics are an essential tool. Without sunlight, there is no colony. The game realistically captures both the advantages and the limitations of solar energy, such as its dependence on the environment.

Why pop culture “vindicates” photovoltaics

This repetition is no coincidence. In movies and games, photovoltaics are chosen because they:
  • operate without fuel,
  • require minimal maintenance,
  • provide energy autonomy,
  • fit visually with the narrative of the future.

These exact same features make them a realistic solution for homes and businesses today.

From imagination to reality

What was once presented as survival technology in a devastated world is now an everyday choice.

Photovoltaics no longer belong to the realm of science fiction or video games; they are a mature technology that reduces costs, increases energy independence, and limits environmental impact.

Pop culture simply did what it always does: showed us ahead of time where we are headed.
