A standard grid-connected solar PV system stops supplying power when the grid goes down, even when the sun is shining. This safety feature prevents unwanted power from being fed into lines that must remain de-energized.
To have backup power, you need a system designed for this function: a compatible inverter, a device that isolates the system from the grid, and a suitable electrical installation. A battery is also usually used. Neither the label “hybrid” nor the presence of a battery on its own guarantees power for the whole home.
Ask for the supported loads, available power, switchover time, and restart conditions to be specified in writing. The backup duration depends on the battery’s charge, consumption, and available generation.
If you need uninterrupted power for sensitive or critical equipment, let the engineer know from the outset. A solar system’s backup function is not automatically the same as a dedicated UPS.
