Questions

What do you need to charge an electric car using your solar PV system’s output?

You need suitable charging infrastructure and an electrical inspection of the installation. The car charges through its charger, not by being connected directly to the panels.

A compatible smart charger, together with the right metering and communication setup, can adjust charging to the available solar surplus. Check that this feature is supported by the specific combination of charger, meter, and energy management system. Not every wallbox offers it automatically.

The electrical supply, wiring, protective devices, and the home’s total load also need to be checked. Dynamic load management can limit charging when other high-power appliances are running. Minimum charging requirements and single-phase or three-phase operation affect how much of the surplus can be used.

For the assessment, provide your travel distance and the hours the vehicle is at home. If you return in the evening, direct solar charging is limited. Adding a home battery exclusively for the car is not necessarily cost-effective.
